Help Yourself Grow is a training programme which provides cookery and gardening sessions for 18-35 year olds with a learning disability.
Our project was developed in 2016 as part of the social care provider Fair Deal in order to provide a meaningful and enjoyable learning experience, and that aim still remains today.
As well as helping adults learn new gardening and cooking skills, we are very proud that our project also encourages independence, forges friendships and increases trainees’ confidence and self-worth. Many former trainees have continued to volunteer with us and there are even some job opportunities for the right people.
We also have a successful schools programme which has run for more than eight years.
The HYG Schools Programme follows the same model as the school-leavers with cooking and gardening training for schools. For cooking classes, pupils attend the training kitchen in Kinning Park and for gardening, the trainers visit the schools.
This has been successful for over eight years and has helped when young adults come to leave school and are already familiar with the project.
